Smoker's lines

Smoker's lines, also called vertical lip lines, are fine wrinkles around the mouth. They are often associated with smoking, but can also be caused by talking, laughing, pursing, sun damage, and natural skin aging. These lines can give the face an older, tired, or severe appearance.

Bee Xavier Clinics in Amsterdam we are specialized in the treating smoker's lines with botulinum toxin. Our approach is subtle, safe and aimed at a natural result.

What are smoker's lines?

Smoker's lines are vertical wrinkles that form primarily above the upper lip and sometimes below the lower lip. Despite their name, these lines are also common in non-smokers. Factors such as:

  • Skin aging
  • Loss of collagen and elasticity
  • Sun damage
  • Genetic predisposition

play an important role. As the skin thins, these lines become more visible and permanent.

How does botulinum toxin work for smoker's lines?

At a smoker's line treatment with botulinum toxin a very small and precisely dosed amount of botulinum toxin is injected into the sphincter muscle around the mouth: the orbicularis oris muscle.

Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces muscle activity, which:

  • Excessive contraction of the lip muscle decreases
  • Soften fine lines around the mouth
  • The formation of new wrinkles is slowed down

When performed correctly, this treatment allows the mouth to continue moving naturally, maintaining a relaxed and fresh appearance. At Xavier Clinics, this treatment is performed exclusively by experienced cosmetic physicians.

Results of botulinum toxin on smoker's lines

  • Smoother skin around the mouth
  • Fresher and youthful appearance
  • Preservation of natural facial expressions

The effect of botulinum toxin is visible after 5 to 14 days and holds an average 3 to 4 months On.

Botulinum toxin or filler for smoker's lines?

Not all smoker's lines are the same. The right treatment depends on the depth and cause of the wrinkles.

  • Botulinum toxin is suitable for beginning or dynamic smoker's lines caused by muscle movement
  • Hyaluronic acid filler can be used for deeper, static smoker's lines that remain visible even at rest

During a personal consultation at Xavier Clinics in Amsterdam, we will assess which treatment or combination best suits your skin and wishes.

Consultation with the doctor

Before all treatments, a consultation is scheduled. During this consultation, the doctor will listen to your wishes and explore the options available to achieve them. The doctor will thoroughly inform you about the pre- and aftercare, the expected results, any risks, and the recovery process for the chosen treatment.

The treatment

Once you've chosen to undergo treatment with us, we'll ask you to complete a medical questionnaire and sign a treatment agreement beforehand. If you take a lot of medication, please bring your medication list to your appointment.

Photos will be taken of you both before and after the treatment for your medical records. In some cases, the skin is locally anesthetized with a numbing cream or anesthetic solution before the treatment.

Aftercare

After the treatment, you will receive an aftercare form by email. You do not need to stay at the clinic and can go home immediately. It is common for the skin to be red and swollen after the treatment, and sometimes some bruising may occur. These side effects will disappear on their own. It is important that you cool the treated area well with the cool pack you received, if advised. If you experience severe bruising, we recommend applying Arnica cream to the treated area.

It is recommended that you avoid applying makeup to the treated areas for the first four hours after treatment. Exposure to intense heat (sun, sauna, or tanning bed) is also discouraged for one week after treatment. We advise against having a facial for two weeks after treatment. You can assess the final result after two weeks.

If you have any questions about your recovery, please feel free to contact us.

Risks

The risk of complications is very small. As with any procedure, there is a small risk of infection or allergy.
