Smoker's lines

Fine vertical lines above the upper lip also known as smoker's lines These lines can give the face an aged or severe appearance. Although the name suggests otherwise, these lines aren't caused solely by smoking, but primarily by facial expressions and skin aging.

At Xavier Clinics we treat smoker's lines with a very subtle botulinum toxin technique, where the muscle activity around the upper lip is slightly reduced. The aim is a softer, smoother appearance, without losing the natural lip movement.

What are smoker's lines?

Smoker's lines are fine vertical wrinkles around the mouth, particularly above the upper lip. They are caused by:

  • Repetitive muscle movements (talking, pursing lips)

  • Decrease in collagen and elasticity

  • Sun damage

  • Smoking

  • Genetic predisposition

When the muscle around the mouth is too active, these lines can become deeper.

How does botulinum toxin work for smoker's lines?

Botulinum toxin subtly relaxes the muscle around the upper lip (orbicularis oris). This:

  • Reduces excessive muscle contractions

  • Are lines becoming softer?

  • Creates a smoother appearance

  • Maintains natural facial expressions

Important: with smokers' lines we work with very low doses, because this is a sensitive area where precision is essential.

Consultation with the doctor

Before all treatments, a consultation is scheduled. During this consultation, the doctor will listen to your wishes and explore the options available to achieve them. The doctor will thoroughly inform you about the pre- and aftercare, the expected results, any risks, and the recovery process for the chosen treatment.

The treatment

Once you've chosen to undergo treatment with us, we'll ask you to complete a medical questionnaire and sign a treatment agreement beforehand. If you take a lot of medication, please bring your medication list to your appointment.

Photos will be taken of you both before and after the treatment for your medical records. In some cases, the skin is locally anesthetized with a numbing cream or anesthetic solution before the treatment.

Aftercare

After the treatment, you will receive an aftercare form by email. You do not need to stay at the clinic and can go home immediately. It is common for the skin to be red and swollen after the treatment, and sometimes some bruising may occur. These side effects will disappear on their own. It is important that you cool the treated area well with the cool pack you received, if advised. If you experience severe bruising, we recommend applying Arnica cream to the treated area.

It is recommended that you avoid applying makeup to the treated areas for the first four hours after treatment. Exposure to intense heat (sun, sauna, or tanning bed) is also discouraged for one week after treatment. We advise against having a facial for two weeks after treatment. You can assess the final result after two weeks.

If you have any questions about your recovery, please feel free to contact us.

Risks

The risk of complications is very small. As with any procedure, there is a small risk of infection or allergy.
