Teeth grinding

Suffering from teeth grinding, jaw clenching or sore jaw muscles? Xavier Clinics in Amsterdam we treat bruxism effectively with botulinum toxin. This medical treatment reduces the overactivity of the chewing muscles, which results in a rapid and lasting reduction in complaints.

What is teeth grinding (bruxism)?

Teeth grinding is the unconscious clenching or grinding of the teeth, often during sleep but sometimes also during the day. This can lead to:

  • Jaw and facial pain
  • Headache or tension headache
  • Wear and tear of teeth and molars
  • Neck and shoulder complaints
  • A square or tense jawline due to overdeveloped chewing muscles

How does botulinum toxin work for teeth grinding?

Botulinum toxin is injected into the masseter muscles (chewing muscles). This temporarily relaxes the muscle without interfering with chewing or speaking. Grinding and clenching decrease significantly, while jaw function is preserved.

Result:

  • Less teeth grinding and jaw clenching
  • Reduction of pain and tension
  • Protection of the teeth
  • Often also a slimmer jawline as an additional aesthetic benefit

Who is this treatment suitable for?

This treatment is suitable for people who:

  • Experiencing teeth grinding at night or daily
  • Not getting enough benefit from a mouthguard
  • Have recurring jaw or headache complaints
  • Feeling excessive tension in the jaw muscles

Consultation with the doctor

Before all treatments, a consultation is scheduled. During this consultation, the doctor will listen to your wishes and explore the options available to achieve them. The doctor will thoroughly inform you about the pre- and aftercare, the expected results, any risks, and the recovery process for the chosen treatment.

The treatment

Once you've chosen to undergo treatment with us, we'll ask you to complete a medical questionnaire and sign a treatment agreement beforehand. If you take a lot of medication, please bring your medication list to your appointment.

Photos will be taken of you both before and after the treatment for your medical records. In some cases, the skin is locally anesthetized with a numbing cream or anesthetic solution before the treatment.

Aftercare

After the treatment, you will receive an aftercare form by email. You do not need to stay at the clinic and can go home immediately. It is common for the skin to be red and swollen after the treatment, and sometimes some bruising may occur. These side effects will disappear on their own. It is important that you cool the treated area well with the cool pack you received, if advised. If you experience severe bruising, we recommend applying Arnica cream to the treated area.

It is recommended that you avoid applying makeup to the treated areas for the first four hours after treatment. Exposure to intense heat (sun, sauna, or tanning bed) is also discouraged for one week after treatment. We advise against having a facial for two weeks after treatment. You can assess the final result after two weeks.

If you have any questions about your recovery, please feel free to contact us.

Risks

The risk of complications is very small. As with any procedure, there is a small risk of infection or allergy.
