Gum smile / Gummy smile

A gumsmile, also gummy smile This occurs when a large portion of the gums is visible when smiling. This can make the teeth appear shorter and the smile look less balanced. Xavier Clinics in Amsterdam We offer a safe, effective and non-surgical treatment to subtly correct a gummy smile and harmonize your smile.

What is a gummy smile?

A gummy smile is usually visible when more than 3–4 millimeters of gum tissue is visible during a smile. This isn't a medical problem, but it can be aesthetically disturbing. Many people feel self-conscious when smiling or talking because of it.

Causes of a gummy smile

A gummy smile can have several causes:

  • Overactive laughing muscles (especially the upper lip)
  • A short upper lip
  • Increased position of the upper jaw
  • Relatively short teeth
  • Excessive growth of the gums

During a personal consultation at Xavier Clinics We analyze your facial and laughter muscles to determine the exact cause and develop a suitable treatment plan.

Treat a gummy smile without surgery

In many cases, a gingival smile can be effectively treated with a injectable muscle relaxant (such as botulinum toxin). This treatment:

  • Relaxes the muscle that pulls the upper lip up too far
  • Ensures that the upper lip remains slightly lower when smiling
  • Gives a more natural, softer smile

The treatment is non-surgical, fast and virtually painless.

What is the treatment like?

  • Duration: approximately 10–15 minutes
  • Recovery time: none to minimal
  • Visible results: within 5–14 days
  • Duration of action: on average 3–4 months

The result is a subtle correction, where your smile remains natural but your gums are less visible.

Who is a gummy smile treatment suitable for?

This treatment is suitable for both women and men who:

  • Being bothered by visible gums when smiling
  • Finding a non-surgical solution
  • Want a quick treatment with natural results

Not every gummy smile is the same. That's why a consultation with an experienced cosmetic doctor essential.

Consultation with the doctor

Before all treatments, a consultation is scheduled. During this consultation, the doctor will listen to your wishes and explore the options available to achieve them. The doctor will thoroughly inform you about the pre- and aftercare, the expected results, any risks, and the recovery process for the chosen treatment.

The treatment

Once you've chosen to undergo treatment with us, we'll ask you to complete a medical questionnaire and sign a treatment agreement beforehand. If you take a lot of medication, please bring your medication list to your appointment.

Photos will be taken of you both before and after the treatment for your medical records. In some cases, the skin is locally anesthetized with a numbing cream or anesthetic solution before the treatment.

Aftercare

After the treatment, you will receive an aftercare form by email. You do not need to stay at the clinic and can go home immediately. It is common for the skin to be red and swollen after the treatment, and sometimes some bruising may occur. These side effects will disappear on their own. It is important that you cool the treated area well with the cool pack you received, if advised. If you experience severe bruising, we recommend applying Arnica cream to the treated area.

It is recommended that you avoid applying makeup to the treated areas for the first four hours after treatment. Exposure to intense heat (sun, sauna, or tanning bed) is also discouraged for one week after treatment. We advise against having a facial for two weeks after treatment. You can assess the final result after two weeks.

If you have any questions about your recovery, please feel free to contact us.

Risks

The risk of complications is very small. As with any procedure, there is a small risk of infection or allergy.
