Smoker's lines

Smoker's lines are fine vertical lines around the mouth, especially above the upper lip. They often give the face a outdated, strict or tired appearance. Although the name suggests otherwise, smoker's lines are not only caused by smoking. At Xavier Clinics we specialize in subtle and safe treatment of smoker's lines, while maintaining a natural lip shape and facial expressions.

How do smoker's lines develop?

Smoker's lines are caused by a combination of factors:

  • Repetitive muscle movements (talking, pursing lips)

  • Decrease in collagen and elastin

  • Skin aging and sun damage

  • Smoking

  • Genetic predisposition

The skin around the mouth is thin and sensitive, which is why lines often become visible here first.

Smoker's lines treatment: our approach

At Xavier Clinics, we look beyond just the lines themselves. Depending on the depth and cause of the smoker's lines, treatment may include:

  • Skin boosters for improving skin quality

  • Fine hyaluronic acid fillers for softening lines

  • Lip contour support

  • Possibly in combination with collagen stimulating treatments

We work with highly refined injection techniques to prevent the lips from becoming heavy or unnatural.

Goal of treatment:
Softening lines and restoring a fresh, youthful appearance without loss of natural expression.

Result of a smoker's lines treatment
  • Softer and smoother skin around the mouth

  • Less visible vertical lines

  • Maintaining natural lip shape

  • Fresher and younger appearance

The result is often gradually visible and holds an average 6 to 12 months on, depending on the treatment chosen.

Frequently asked questions about smoker's lines

What exactly are smoker's lines?

Smoker's lines are fine vertical lines around the mouth, especially above the upper lip.

Do I have to smoke to get smoker's lines?

No. Even non-smokers can develop smoker's lines due to facial expressions, skin aging, and genetic factors.

Which treatment is most suitable?

This varies from person to person. During the consultation, we'll determine whether fillers, skin boosters, or a combination will provide the best results.

Will this treatment make my lips thicker?

No. The goal is skin improvement, not lip augmentation. We work with minimal amounts and refined techniques.

Is the treatment painful?

Most products contain a numbing agent. If desired, a numbing cream can be applied beforehand.

When will I see results?

Depending on the treatment you will see the result immediately to gradually in the weeks afterward.

What are possible side effects?

Mild swelling, redness or small bruises may occur and usually disappear within a few days.

Can the treatment be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Smoker's lines are often combined with lip enhancement, marionette lines or skin boosters for a harmonious result.

Consultation with the doctor

Before all treatments, a consultation is scheduled. During this consultation, the doctor will listen to your wishes and explore the options available to achieve them. The doctor will thoroughly inform you about the pre- and aftercare, the expected results, any risks, and the recovery process for the chosen treatment.

The treatment

Once you've chosen to undergo treatment with us, we'll ask you to complete a medical questionnaire and sign a treatment agreement beforehand. If you take a lot of medication, please bring your medication list to your appointment.

Photos will be taken of you both before and after the treatment for your medical records. In some cases, the skin is locally anesthetized with a numbing cream or anesthetic solution before the treatment.

Aftercare

After the treatment, you will receive an aftercare form by email. You do not need to stay at the clinic and can go home immediately. It is common for the skin to be red and swollen after the treatment, and sometimes some bruising may occur. These side effects will disappear on their own. It is important that you cool the treated area well with the cool pack you received, if advised. If you experience severe bruising, we recommend applying Arnica cream to the treated area.

It is recommended that you avoid applying makeup to the treated areas for the first four hours after treatment. Exposure to intense heat (sun, sauna, or tanning bed) is also discouraged for one week after treatment. We advise against having a facial for two weeks after treatment. You can assess the final result after two weeks.

If you have any questions about your recovery, please feel free to contact us.

Risks

The risk of complications is very small. As with any procedure, there is a small risk of infection or allergy.
