It seems like everyone's doing it. Lip fillers. What used to be reserved for pop stars and the elite has now become the norm. Friends, colleagues, and even the girl behind the counter at the supermarket—we're practically bombarded with them. What's so special about lip fillers? And are they even safe? All these questions cross my mind when I think about it. Aren't those fillers incredibly painful? Are your lips numbed first? Won't I immediately look completely fake?
There's only one way to find out, and that's by undergoing the lip filler treatment yourself. After a long search, I ended up at a filler clinic that appealed to me. I gathered some pictures online of examples I liked—just a little more volume, but definitely not too much. Before I knew it, I was sitting in the chair at a filler clinic in Amsterdam, Xavier Clinics. The doctor explained that lip fillers consist of a substance naturally occurring in the body and that fillers are therefore not dangerous. This reassured me enormously. While the doctor explained what would and wouldn't suit me, I felt my lips tingle as if I'd ended up at the dentist. The numbing cream was starting to take effect.
In hindsight, it wasn't so bad. I was clearly worrying about nothing. It looks scarier than it feels, thankfully. It's now been 14 days since I had my lips filled. I have to admit, it took a lot of getting used to at first, but that was partly due to the swelling, but I've gotten used to it now. The doctor kept my natural lips with just a little extra, exactly how I wanted. Those around me barely notice; only the people who know me well have seen it. I'm only now understanding the hype.
